Alcoy upsets Samboan, Bogo routs San Remigio in Gov. Cup cagefest

-

Alcoy pulled off a 6857 upset over the previously undefeated Samboan in Bracket S2 of the 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup Under-21 Inter-Cities/ Municipalities Basketball Tournament last Saturday night at the Boljoon municipal gym.

Samboan actually got off to a hot start, with Yojildridge Luague scoring nine points as they took an early 19-13 lead. Alcoy, however, charged back in the second canto to pull within just a hairline at halftime, 28-29.

After forging a 46-all deadlock at the end of the third period, Alcoy grew even hotter and finished off Samboan using a 22-11 run in the windup.

Renly de Leon, RR de los Santos, and Rodmark Gemotog each scored 12 points in Alcoy's first win in the league organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission.

Samboan was hardly hit by the absence of its two key players Joshua Balankig and Louie Jay Señagan. Luage and Eves Niño Manolong stepped up with 12 points apiece but it wasn't enough as they saw their two-game winning run come to a halt.

With Samboan’s loss, Dalaguete and Boljoon now share the leadership in S2 with identical 2-0 cards. Dalaguete grinded through a 66-63 victory over Oslob, while Boljoon pounded Santander, 82-69.

In Bracket N3 up North, Bogo City coasted to its second win in a row with a masterful 92-53 demolition of San Remigio at the Bantayan municipal gym in Bantayan Island.

Justine Valenzuela unloaded all his 20 points in the second and the third quarters that catapulted Bogo into a commanding 75-40 lead going into the last 12 minutes of play.

Valenzuela was backed up by Jonathan Mamongan, Serg Jay Alburo and Michael Vincent Sendrome who connived for 34 points in their 39-point blowout of the hapless San Remigio.

In other games, Bantayan bounced back with an 82-70 drubbing of Medellin, while Sta. Fe earned a share of N3 lead with Bogo after outlasting Madridejos, 81-75.—
