Modular Fashion

- By Yasunari Ramon Suarez Taguchi

The modular smartphone may not have been the “next big thing” in the gadgets arena, but the concept behind it is doing backflips and somersaults in the world of fashion.

Trail-blazed by the style directions advocated by designers like Ricardo Preto, the crossover of the modular smartphone concept into fashion isn’t all that difficult to grasp – it abides by the idea of parts (tops, bottoms and accessories) that are interchangeable and complementary with one another.

This approach towards “modular fashion” was the nucleus of the Cebu 2017 Summer Collection launch of the “Ricardo Preto Exclusive for Rustan’s” and “U by Ricardo Preto” labels – which saw the gathering of Cebu’s fashion cliques at the second level of Rustan’s Ayala Center Cebu on Saturday, May 20.

With no less than Ricardo Preto himself gracing the occasion, attention was focused on the Portuguese designer’s take on non-seasonal pieces that can be mixed and matched to fit with one’s personal style.

Preto’s “components” can stand on their own or accentuate their “cocomponents.” The blouses, trousers and accessories were all made with a ‘space’ that’s left for the wearers to fill in – for wearers to put bits and pieces of themselves without letting Preto’s designs take over their personal styles.

This results in a seamless union between Preto’s aesthetic visions and a wearer’s stylistic identities, be it corporate wear, eveningwear or leisurewear combos.

Since his debut in 2005, Preto has been creative director of “Ricardo Preto Exclusive for Rustan’s” and “U by Ricardo Preto.” In such position, he weaves a novel aspect to what has become the normcore trend for Filipinos, characterized by structured cuts, clean minimalist lines and sleek silhouettes.
