Handy school lunch

- By Elena Peňa

Now that school has opened, one of the biggest challenges for homemakers is preparing “baon” for the school kids. Mothers would always want to make a healthy lunch for the kids. But no matter the nutritional value of the takeout meal, it’s as good only as the kids’ willingness to really eat it. Part of the challenge, therefore, is to make “baon” that kids like.

The pizza fits the bill right. Kids love pizza. And a pizza lunch doesn’t spoil easily; so there’s a good chance that it lasts and remains as fresh as when mom packed it. And it’s not messy stuff – kids are not likely to smear their dainty uniforms with sauce or gravy dripping from the meal.

Most important of all – it’s sure to be clean and nutritious, if it’s made at home. Mommy may also go creative with the toppings. For example, she may put in vegetables together with the other ingredients so the kids may take it all in every bite.

Yes, pizza can actually be made at home, with no need for special equipment. There’s even no need for laborious process preparing the dough. The following Sliced Bread Pizza recipe from the website https:// recipes.sparkpeople.com is worth the try. It can be done in 30 minutes or less.

Sliced Bread Pizza

Ingredients:

4 slices white bread

1 cup shredded mozarella cheese 4 tbsp butter

1 chopped onion

1 chopped green bell pepper 1 chopped tomato ketchup to taste oregano to taste salt to taste crushed red chili to taste (optional)

Procedure:

Preheat oven toaster. Lightly butter bread on one side and place the slice on a cooking sheet buttered side up. Spread some ketchup and add the vegetables.

Add some salt, oregano, (and crushed red chili).

Spread ¼ cup cheese on each slice. Place in oven until the bread becomes toasted on the bottom. Let cool before serving or packing.

Of course, any more toppings may be added. Two slices of well-topped homemade pizza can already be a full lunch to an average-size kid. And this type of takeout lunch may not have to be limited to school kids at all. Busy office workers may adopt it too.
