SBP Passerelle launches 32nd season

Thirty-two years and counting.

Three decades of grassroots /age group basketball will be celebrated as the 32nd season of the SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo kicks off at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow at the Magis Eagles Arena of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and across the country. Managed by the BEST Center and backstoppe­d by the Baby Cobras upped their lead to eight, 28-20, but the Wildkitten­s stayed Milo since its started, the twin developmen­tal tournament features the best basketball players of Cebu in the Under 15 and Under 12 age groups.

The University of the Visayas is favored to repeat and defend its SBP and Passerelle division championsh­ips, but competitio­n is seen to be tighter this year. The Baby Lancers will face stiff opposition from Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de in fighting mood to narrow down the gap at halftime, 29-32. Cebu and the muchimprov­ed Don Bosco Technical College, Inc.

Five teams compose the SBP division with University of San Carlos and Southweste­rn University­PHINMA joining UV, SHSAteneo and Don Bosco. The SBP division is composed of players in the Under 12, 11 and 10 age groups. In tomorrow’s games, UV faces Don Bosco at 8:30 a.m. while SHS-Ateneo goes up against USC at 9:45 a.m.

After the short break, the two protagonis­ts figured in a cat-and-mouse SWU-PHINMA, University of Southern Philippine­s Foundation and Abellana National School. Group B is composed of SHS-Ateneo, Don Bosco, USC and Cebu Eastern College.

UV kicks off its season against Abellana at 9:45 a.m. as SWU-PHINMA collides with USPF in the first game at 8:30 a.m. in Group A games. In Group B, Don Bosco faces CEC at 8:30 a.m. while SHS-Ateneo plays USC at 9:30 a.m. The Passerelle division is composed of players in the Under 15, 14 and 13 age groups.

The tournament format is a single round-robin classifica­tion phase. The semifinals will be #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3 clashes for the SBP division. It will be a crossover semifinals in the Passerelle division with A#1 facing B#2 and B#1 playing A#2 in sudden-death playoff games.

The Cebu champion will play in the Visayas Regional Finals in Iloilo October 7-8 and the Visayas champion will play in the national finals in Davao in December.
