Capitol eyes alternative road from Compostela to Cebu City

The Cebu provincial government is planning to develop a 40-kilometer alternative road from Compostela to Cebu City to shorten the travel time and to address the traffic problem.

Vice Governor Agnes Magpale said this will ease up the traffic situation going to the city from the northern parts of the province including Danao City, Compostela, Lilo-an, Consolacion, and Mandaue City.

She said that most of the employees of the provincial government living in the northern parts of Cebu will get home late in the evening due to heavy traffic.

Magpale and Governor Hilario Davide III showed to the media yesterday the route that will serve as a diversion road passing through Barangays Canamucan, Mulao, Guimbal, Dap-dap, and Tag-ube of Compostela town and Paril in Cebu City.

"Pag-guwa nato, Paril na. It's not a shorter distance but definitely shorter time wise kay wala man ta'y naagian nga traffic," Magpale said.

She added that the access road was identified by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) as a national road project and its concreting will start next year, including the Naga-Danao highway project.

Davide said that they are still looking for more diversion roads so that motorists who want to avoid traffic along national highway can pass by these roads.The road project is under the provincial government's Greenway Links project.

"It's just a start. Si Vice Gov, she thought, mas maayong ayohon gyud diha because that will provide also sa atong motorists coming from Cebu City, coming from the north, moagi gyud diha," Davide said.

He said the access road will cut the traveling time shorter by about one hour and 35 minutes.

The road is only passable during daytime but not at night and Magpale said the provincial government will install light posts after its concreting next year.

Compostela Mayor Joel Quiño said farmers from his town will be more comfortable in travelling to Cebu City after the road concreting shall be done.

"Dako na kaayo ni nga tabang. Pwede na sila mo divert padung Cebu City. Ang mga farmersnato, comportable na mo biyahe," he said.

Quiño assures that the municipal government will put up light posts to ensure the safety of his constituents going to the city. The alternative road will be open for both private and public vehicles.
