The Royal Princess at sea: After our five-hour visit to Katakolon, Greece the site of the 1st Olympic Games that began in 776 BC, the ship then

sailed to the Island of Mykonos. Honestly, if we didn’t plan this Family cruise vacation, I would never have heard of Mykonos. In fact taking the Royal Princess for a vacation meant that we would be on this ship for at least 11 days at sea. I have ridden on ships many times before, but it is usually an overnight experience. But it is totally different on a cruise ship where your room really becomes a hotel.

In Mykonos, we took the bus to the old port and as luck would have it, the Municipality of Mykonos had a golf cart available for free and we took it to the old part of town. One thing about Mykonos, all their buildings or homes are white. The tour guides would tell you that it is to ward off the heat of the sun. But I think this is one aspect of Greek tourism that makes these places beautiful to look at.

If Mykonos were in the Philippines, their structures would never pass our strict standards of our National Building Code (NBC). Certain streets are so narrow that if two people meet each other one had to stop to let the other fellow pass through. Yes even wheelchairs can’t pass through in certain areas. But this place was crawling with tourists coming from two cruise ships and their beaches full of beautiful skimpily clad sexy bodies. Of course the mothers and grandmothers too are also in their bikinis! What surprised me in Mykonos was, there was a Catholic Chapel close by. Yes they have small chapels from both the Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches.

We left Mykonos in the evening and sailed for the famous island of Santorini. During the Minoan era, Santorini was a huge volcanic island. The Minoans were famous for being an advanced civilization. They even had flush toilets in those ancient times. Then Santorini erupted in one of the world’s largest eruptions that created what is known as a volcanic winter. What is left in Santorini is the caldera, similar to what you can see in Tagaytay, but it is probably twice as large.

Since Santorini doesn’t have large port facilities, cruise ships stay close to the shore and boat tenders fetch the passengers to waiting tour buses. Like Mykonos, all buildings in Santorini are white and dot the landscape around the ridge of the caldera, thus making Santorini one of the most beautiful sceneries in Greece. From its highest peak, Santorini offers the best views that tourists can hope to see. If you didn’t know, Santorini was suspected to be the fable city of Atlantis that sunk into the sea. Of course that has never been proven. Incidentally if you plan to visit any of the Greek islands, have a crash program on Greek Mythology.
