Evidence more than statements

-

Caloocan City police are in possession of a "person of interest" in the murder of Michael Angelo Remecio, the sixteen-year-old whose body was found in Bulacan. It is not clear whether these policemen are the same ones that will be relieved en masse, or if these are the replacements. It doesn't seem right if those on the way out would still lead an investigation. According to this person, Remecio joined him and his friends in a drinking session. But a heated argument or a fight ensued prompting his friends to stab Remecio dead. While he admits to helping dispose of the body, he claims he did not stab the victim. As if that makes it all alright. Authorities are now searching for these so-called friends, both to shed light on the case and to corroborate the story being sold to all of us.

Because of the advanced state of decomposition of Remecio's body, the PAO could not come up with definitive findings and results. They estimate that Remecio had been dead for at least a week before his body was found. There are indications he was stabbed, but again the state of decomposition made it difficult to ascertain. There were indicationsof blunt force trauma to the head. The PAO did not also understand why the funeral home covered the body with powdered cement, something they have never seen done before. It only made their investigation more difficult and nonconclusive. Did someone order the covering of the body with the said cement, precisely to hide physical findings? That alone seems fishy to me. The funeral home should be investigated as well.

If Remeciowas stabbed to death, why was it necessary to bind his hands? That doesn't make sense. If the body was to be disposed of after the killing, why even bind his hands? The evidence of blunt force trauma to the head also raises other scenarios leading to his murder. Was he tortured before being killed? Nowadays, evidence is more important and reliable than statements from socalled witnesses. Take the case of Tomas Bagcal, whose different statements now differ from the statement of a new witness and CCTV footage that has surfaced. Let's not even mention the initial statements of police in the cases of Kian Delos Santos and Carl Angelo Arnaiz. It is unfortunate that in this case, there were efforts to conceal evidence.

Another murder, of yet another teenager, from Caloocan. Are the streets really safe? Are we really comparable to Singapore, as some are saying? Or has the culture of killing been ingrained into the psyche of the public, where public officials seem to consider them isolated cases, or even cause to question the sexual preferences of those investigating them? Does that even matter? Would it have been a non-issue if all the victims were female, being investigated by males?
