Internal cleansing

If PNP chief Gen. Dela Rosa has said anything good since he became the organization’s head, this is it. According to him, he wants the culture of “kuyog” implemented in the PNP, where upright, honest, good policemen get to vent their anger on the corrupt elements within the PNP. This is what he is supposed to be doing. I have already said that crying in the Senate, which he has done twice, does not mean a thing. If anything, it shows weakness and incompetence. What he must show is anger. Anger towards those who are ruining the image of the PNP. Anger towards those who are eroding the public’s trust in police officers. Those who have no respect for the law, and no interest in serving and protecting the public. Those who are criminals masquerading as police officers.

I’m sure there are still good and honest policemen out there. Those who are not tainted by corruption, money, and those who don’t only think of themselves. When the entire Caloocan City police force was relieved, many felt bad for those good cops that were only guilty by association. All the more reason for these cops to be angry at those who have tainted them as well. They should implement what Gen. Dela Rosa wants. I’m sure they know who these scalawags are, but because of some perverted code of conduct, they will not rat on them. The PNP after all may be likened to a fraternity, where a certain degree of brotherhood translates to keeping silent about those crossing over to the dark side. But as bad as the image of the PNP is now, true reform must come from their own ranks. They need to purge the organization of those out to ruin it. The good cops need to show they will not allow their organization to fall into disgrace and ruin.

President Duterte has also raised the reward to three million pesos for the arrest of so-called “ninja cops”, or police officers protecting those involved in illegal drugs or drug trafficking. These “ninja cops” also allegedly sell drugs that were confiscated in police operations. Duterte laments that no arrests have been made since he offered the two-million peso reward. As I said, there may be a code where police are not supposed to rat on a fellow cop, no matter how grave the crime. Three million pesos is a large sum of money. We can only hope that the new reward will generate results in this program of purging the PNP of criminals.
