The evil that fraternities do

-

If brotherhood is the main objective of fraternities and sororities, then why do fratmen intentionally murder neophytes under the guise of initiation? Don’t tell me these are unintended. As pillars of their organizations, they should know the consequences of their brutality. How would the leaders of fraternities justify the murders of their brothers despite the existing Anti-Hazing Law? And why are students, still practicing rites of inflicting harm as a way of initiating new entrants into these Greek-lettered societies that call themselves Lambda Lambda, Sigma Sigma, and such?

There are neither justifying circumstance that can explain such animalistic propensities. Perpetrators of such crimes should be meted the severest form of punishment. If the death sentence will be revived, crimes of this nature should among those punishable by capital punishment. If some school officials embolden fratmen by their tacit approvals or notorious negligence then they should be cited as accessory or accomplice depending on the facts of the case.

These fraternities have no redeeming social values. They do not contribute to the solution of the country’s socioeconomic problems. Many frat brothers have been reported to have been involved in leakages in the college of law exams and even in the Bar Exams, or, at the very least, the unfair giving of tips to Bar examinees because the Bar examiners were allegedly their fraternity brothers. Deans and professors who are fratmen themselves are in conflict of interest because they tend to favor students who are their “brods”, to the disadvantage beloning to rival fraternities. Therefore, these fraternities are usually bastardizing the merit system. They even allegedly poke their hands in the recruitment of men and women in the judiciary and manipulate the proceedings of the Judicial and Bar Council, by putting their own brothers there.

In the judiciary, these fraternities are corrupting the judges and the prosecutors who are their brothers. Fraternities do influence appointments and promotions in the courts. Giant and powerful law firms are being run by fraternities and they deal with their frat brods in judicial robes, thus bastardizing the administration of justice. In the executive, appointments by Cabinet members of their subalterns and underlings are influenced by fraternal ties, and thus their decisions are colored by their fraternal biases and selfish interests. In the legislative, voting on bills and the allocations of powers and resources are dictated by fraternal affiliations. Like the old boys club, and the mistahs in the PMA, these fraternal boys are being loyal to their narrow interests and selfish ambitions. They are no different from the Sputnik and Sigue Sigue gangs inside the national penitentiaries. They betray public trust and serve only the desires of their frat members.

We join the nation in our collective outrage against the fraternities which do not only kill innocent neophytes, but also corrupt our government and use their powers to protect each other, against the interests of the Filipino people. We denounce all shenanigans perpetuated by the scoundrels and rascals in the fraternities. These fraternities should be exposed and their leaders punished to the full extent of the law. Now.
