Retired McGrady back with Magic in advisory role
MIAMI — Seven-time NBAAll-Star Tracy McGrady, inducted earlier this year into the Basketball Hall of Fame, was named on Friday as a special assistant to Orlando Magic chief executiveAlex Martins.
McGrady, who played for theMagicfrom2000to2004,will be available to players and coaches as well as assisting and advising executives in several areas, including promotions.
"We're extremely pleased to bring him back home," Martins said. "Having Tracy McGrady, a perennial All-Star and a Hall of Famer, on our staff is tremendous for our entire organization.
"Whether it will be on the court with the team or in the Central Florida community, Tracy's knowledge, experience and stature will be an incredible asset for our players and our organization."
McGrady,38,playedin295 games over four seasons in Orlando, averaging 28.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.53 steals. He twice led the league in scoring, averaging 32.1 points in 2002-03 and 28.0 points in 2003-04 and was named the NBA's 2001 Most Improved Player.
"I am thrilled to be back where I truly made a name for myself," McGrady said. "I am excited to be able to help them with whatever they may need."
McGrady played 15 seasons in the NBA with Orlando, Toronto, Houston, New York, Detroit, Atlanta and San Antonio before retiring in 2013. He also spent the 2012-13 campaign with China's Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles.
