Japanese judo master shares know-how to Cebuano martial artists

-

Legendary Japanese judoka Sensei Nori Bunasawa conducted a wide-ranging seminar participated in by judokas, grapplers and other martial arts enthusiasts the other night at the Citi Gym in Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The event was graced by Philippine Sports Commissioner Ramon ‘El Presidente’ Fernandez together with Philippine Judo Federation Executive Vice President Atty. Vicente Fernandez and Nimrod NL Quiñones of the Cebu Province Sports Commission.

Aside from the basic judo, Sensei Bunasawa also introduced jukkendo, a martial art based on Kodokan Jigoro Kano’s judo self-defense and “Conde Koma”, which is Mitsuyo Maeda’s pro-fighting MMA style of judo and jiujitsu.

“I want to see judo and martial arts grow here in Cebu,” said the 68-year-old Bunasawa. “I will surely be back for more seminars because I love to share my knowledge to martial artists here.”

To the amazement of participants, Sensei Bunasawa combined his extensive knowledge of throwing, grappling and submission with the striking arts.

Sensei Bunasawa also focused on the aspect of self-defense. The techniques were simple and practical that can be easily used during dangerous situations like how to defend against a punch, taking down an assailant and defending takedowns.

Bunasawa plans to return next year. He will go to Bacolod next week for a similar activity.—
