Bittersweet

-

We always desire for good things in life. We long for sweet reminiscences with our loved ones. Fond memories remind us of how life is worth living for and with others. However there are also bitter memories though how deplorable they may seem but would lead us to a better condition of life or well-being.

Oftentimes we complain of the bitterness of what is going on in our lives without even knowing that the end of it is something sweet, something that makes us better. George Herbert's poem "Bittersweet" talks about how he sees the Lord. He is saying that God is both loving and angry at the same time. He is saying that the Lord's love is both bitter and sweet because though he loves the Lord he complains. He has a sweet and sour relationship with God: "Ah, my deare angrie Lord/Since thou dost love, yet strike/Cast down, yet help afford/Sure I will do the like. I will complain, yet praise/I will bewail, approve/And all my sowre-sweet days/I will lament, and love."

There are just situations in life that even if they are hurtful at first, or create an unpleasant experience, but in the end would provide us lessons and so would make us better persons. Experiences, whether good or bad, both provide lessons in life. After all not all experiences are good, sweet, wonderful and positive, oftentimes those that are unpleasant, bad, hurtful would provide us hard lessons that would make us better persons.

There are bitter memories that make us better persons. These memories that challenge us, let us realize what we need to be better the next time around. Depending on how we will take it but for one who derives lessons from it would find that there is still a big room for growth.

It is likewise in the bitterness when we are sick and be reminded not to be back to that physical condition and so be careful with our health. If we only have not experienced pain and bitterness, we could not realize the consequences of what we did and make it right this time for the future.

During our younger days when we were "wild and free", we were not conscious of the repercussions brought about by our chosen lifestyle. But this has a toll to our health. And that we are getting older, our health is now asking for our attention. When we have the time and resources, there are also other undertakings that we can hardly do. For one, we don't have the much-needed energy to sustain certain activities. We are already constraint to eat, and only in moderation. And any other routines that somehow stop us from enjoying what we think will make us happy and satisfied. Life, after all, is not all bed of roses, sweet memories, painful momentsbut a combination of everything. We just have to find the core of everything because when one is leaning on either of both sides, we need to deal life's discontentment and miseries.
