An old couple suffered injuries when their shanties collapsed after being hit by large sea waves in Barangay Poblacion, LapuLapu City, around 6:20 a.m. yesterday.

Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management (LLCDRRMO) Officer Andy Berame said it was a speeding sea vessel traveling along the Mactan Channel which caused the large wave movement, hitting the shanties and causing the collapse.

“Usa ka fast craft niagi, ang dako nga bawod naigo sa ilahang balay. Girespondehan nato ganiha. Wala ma'y namatay pero naa'y injured,” Berame said.

Alfredo Rosales, 72, and wife Lilia, 67, were hurt when their three shanties collapsed, while seven other family members including a 2-year-old were unharmed.

"Usa ra gyud sila ka pamilyahan, mura'g extended family ni sila unya ilahang balay nagsikit-sikit na," Berame said.

Alfredo suffered wounds to his shoulders and to his back, while one of Lilia's legs was broken. They were immediately rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) for treatment.

“Dugay na siguro sila namuyo diha ug ang structures dili ligon,” said Berame.

The family members are now temporarily housed inside the basketball court of the barangay.

Berame advised the family to avoid living directly by the sea as this could be dangerous.

“Ato sila gi-advisan nga dili na sila mopuyo didto kay hazard zone man na dapita,” Berame said.

Some home appliances, clothes, and kitchen utensils were the only items saved by the family after their homes submerged into the sea.

The LLCDRRMO was assisted by the mobile response team of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) - Station 3.
