Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza plans to demolish the stilt houses along the coastal waters off Barangay Poblacion following the incident where three shanties fell flat on the waters after they got hit by sea waves brought by a passing fast craft.

She said the city and the barangay already warned the residents there that the place they are staying is identified as a danger zone.

“We did forewarn them already. Especially kanang danger zone. I think hingusgan nato nga ma-demolish gyud", she said.

The collapsed shanties had caused wounds and bruises to 72 -year-old Alfredo Rosales while his wife, Lilia, 67, suffered a broken leg.

Both were immediately brought to the hospital for medical treatment.

Eight other members of the couple’s family were not injured in the incident.

The area where the incident happened is near the Kasamahan Wharf and a large manufacturing company.

Radaza said incident should not be repeated again and demolishing similar houses built beside the sea should be enforced.

“Atoa i-clear ang maong lugar. Ang lugar kuyaw kaayo man gyud. Ang bawd di matantiya usahay,” she said.

Radaza said she will coordinate with the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (LLCDRRMO), Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO), and Office of the Urban Poor for the implementation of the demolition plan.

Radaza also ask officials of Barangay Poblacion to monitor the area.

She has yet to obtain as to how many shanties were built and the number of residents living near the sea.

The mayor added that the city will provide cash assistance through the bridgefinance program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for the families that will be affected by the demolition as the city does not have a lot for their relocation area.

“Wala man ta’y yuta diri sa siyudad. Mao cash atoa ihatag nila,” she said.

Rad aza added the construction of a mediumrise socialized housing in Barangays Pajac and Bankal is ongoing after Chinese investors entered a publicprivate partnership (PPP) with the city early this year.
