Cone promises fans of more championship to come

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is not resting on its laurels after retaining the season-ending PBA Governors' Cup, with coach Tim Cone promising more championships for their legions of fans to enjoy.

"I always said we didn't come to Ginebra to win just one championship, we always wanna win many championships and so this is our job," Cone told the record crowd of 54,086 after Ginebra's 101-95 victory over Meralco in Friday's deciding seventh game at the Philippine Arena here.

"We're not gonna stop here, we got more to get guys, we got more to come," added Cone, whose latest victory enhanced his status as the winningest coach in PBA history with 20 titles.

Cone's latest addition to his championship collection had him witnessed another timely performance from LA Tenorio, who was later named as CignalPBA Press Corps Finals Most Valuable Player after scoring 26 points spiked by five triples.

Behind Tenorio, Greg Slaughter, Joe Devance and Scottie Thompson, Ginebra led by a high of 20 points twice, including one in the third when Tenorio erupted for 10 points in the period.

"I thought we had laser focus to start the game, we really keyed up," Cone said. "Guys know what they wanted to do, they got out there and executed and played with emotion, but they were still very calm, amazing job and LA really deserved the MVP."

The title, however, nearly slipped away when Meralco narrowed the gap late in the fourth to four behind import Allen Durham and Jared Dillinger, who finally broke out of his offensive struggles in the finals.

Ginebra, however, got the needed breaks to give its huge supporters another reason to celebrate. —
