The months leading up to December are replete with holidays and occasions that’s sure to lead to lots of parties and reunions. It means a trip to the grocery store is in order! But before starting to stock up on supplies, it helps to make sure to maximize one’s time and effort by shopping smarter.

Give your pantry and refrigerator a once-over. You might feel sure that you’ve run out of flour, but have you checked the other cabinet? Are you really out of butter or are there two more blocks hiding in the back of your chiller? Double check your supplies first to avoid coming home from the store only to find that you’ve stocked up on items you still have more than enough of, especially if they’re perishable.
Plan ahead. Make a list and check it twice. If you already have specific meals in mind, go over the ingredients for those first. Be sure to pay attention to portion sizes as well to avoid overbuying and ending up with spoiled excess.
Give yourself enough time to shop. Don’t go to the store 10 minutes before closing time on the night before a scheduled gathering at home. It’s easy to miss out on items if you’re panicking on the way to the counter. Carve out enough time in your schedule so that your shopping trip isn’t rushed.
Compare prices. Buying in bulk is the best shopping hack. But before you fill your cart, reevaluate whether you actually need that much of a particular item. If you’re hosting less than ten people and aren’t a big fan of chips yourself, you might want to reconsider buying six jumbo packs.
Double check for discounts and promos. Now and then, there’s a price slash on certain items as the days roll closer to Christmas. Keep an eye on these promos.
