Cebu schools vie in TF’s parol-making contest
Seventeen different private and public elementary schools in Cebu participated in the The FREEMAN Newspaper’s Light a Star on-the-spot lantern-making contest.
Spearheaded by The FREEMAN Manager, Mr. Melandro Mendoza, the contest, which is on its 10th year, is open to both the public and private elementary and secondary schools in Visayas.
The competition is a way to promote recycling practices and use of indigenous materials to make them aware of the importance of protecting the environment.
It is also a way to encourage the students to develop their creativity and artistry by being resourceful in using recycled materials.
The competition for the elementary division was held yesterday while the secondary will be today, November 10, at SM City Cebu’s Activity Center.
The contest is usually participated in by contestants that come from the different parts of Visayas such as the province of Bohol, Dumaguete, and etc.
However, this year’s contestants are only Cebu schools because of the FREEMAN’s late announcement.
“Karon medyo gamay ra [contestants], kay medyo late mi naka-announce sa event,” said Mendoza.
Each team consists of three (3) members who are all bona fide students of any grade/year level with a coach to guide them.
Each team from the elementary category used the plastic spoons to decorate the lanterns while the secondary contestants will use plastic bottle caps as decorations.
The final judging and the awarding of winners will be on November 29 at 2 p.m. at the same venue.
