UC overtakes USC in Cebu City Olympics

Defending champion University of Cebu bounced back on the second day of the 27th Cebu City Olympics as it grabbed the lead from University of San Carlos.

UC jins made up after their weak performanc­e in poomsae during the opening day as they took dominated the kyorugi event where they harvested five gold medals yesterday at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

UC currently has nine gold, four silver and one bronze medals followed by USC which has a 7-4-2 medal tally as Unit 3 got two golds and one bronze medal.

Contribute­d gold for UC in taekwondo were Warren Ian and Wendil Jay Rama, Dineson Caneda, Roydajane Ranille and Mayn Yengell Coran.

Warren Ian overpowere­d USC’s Charles Labiste in the finweight finals, while his brother Wendil Jay dominated Nico Ariza of Abellana National School. Caneda was too much for Don Carlos Gothong Memorial National High School’s Joshua Atillo.

Ranille won her flyweight battle with Kyla Bonghanoy of Pardo, while Coran blasted Anthonette Laresma of DCGMNHS.

Melody Jane Infante failed to duplicate Ranille and Coran’s feat after bowing down to USC’s Cha Ynah Labiste.

Don Vicente Rama Memorial National High School’s Princess Maegan Parba also snatched a gold as she outpointed University of the Visayas’ Princess Fhil Santanez.

In the elementary action, Unit 5, which is composed of UC, USC and City Central, maintained the lead with 3-1-1 gold-silver-bronze medals.—
