-

The Southwestern University-Phinma Lady Cobras slammed the University of San Jose Recoletos in straight sets to rule the women’s volleyball event of the 2017 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season yesterday at the University of San Carlos gymnasium.

The Lady Cobras reigned supreme with a dominating 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 win over USJ-R for a 2-1 edge in their best-ofthree championship series.

SWU’s lone setter and team captain Therese Rae Ramas led her team to triumph along with Janelle Cabahug, Floremel Rodriguez, Sheena Quiño, Coleen Gimeno and Dyan Darantinao.

The 21-year-old Ramas also claimed her back-to-back MVP award.

SWU head coach Roy Ulan, for his part, was impressed with Ramas and also expressed his gratitude to his six key players who are all on their final year. “I told them to just give their best and be confident. Ramas really did a great job for us this year along with my other veterans who really delivered in the finals. Everyone contributed on our success especially my graduating players; I am really thankful,” said Ulan.

In the men’s action, SWU dethroned USJ-R with a thrilling five-setter, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 2515, 15-11.

Mark Petancio who carried SWU’s offensive load was hailed as the Most Valuable Player.

SWU took the early lead but the spiking Jaguars went aggressive in the next two sets. With their back against the wall, the Cobras fought back in the fourth canto to force a deciding set.

SWU men’s squad proved to be the hungrier squad as they sustained their momentum to nail the final nail on USJ’R’s coffin via a close 15-11 decision.—
