My thoughts on Bonifacio Day

-

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CCDRRMC) that rushed to Juana Osmeña Street to look into the sinkhole reported on radio declared that that was not a sinkhole, but an “infra glitch.” Whatever you call that thing, in my book it is still a sinkhole because it is a hole that was formed because water washed away much of the earth under the asphalt. Right now, what the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) have done is place a steel plate over the hole so traffic can return to normal.

Thanks to the quick resolution of Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the committee on infrastructure, a program of work is being prepared so that a drainage and culvert can be constructed. Frankly speaking, all that the DEPW should do is simply fill up this hole with rocks and cement it. This will be the quickest way to fix the problem. I have walked in that area for so many years; this is the first time it has happened … so it is really a no-brainer on how to fix that hole. But last time I heard, they were already fixing the hole.

Mind you almost exactly a year ago, the City of Fukuoka in Japan had a sinkhole as large as a small building right in the middle of the street. The hole was so huge, many thought that it would have taken the Japanese government months to fix that hole and open the road to traffic. But they covered that sinkhole in just a week! This hole was a thousand times larger than the hole in Juana Osmeña St. You can Google this story and see it for yourself in YouTube.
