“Flores y Piedra”
A watercolor art exhibit opened on Saturday, November 25, at the Chapel Gallery of the Archdiocesan Museum of Cebu, in celebration of the museum’s 11th anniversary. The museum was established in 2006, in a structure that was nearly 200 years old.
Titled “Flores y Piedra,” meaning “flowers and stone,” the exhibit is a fundraiser for the benefit of the museum’s projects. The featured paintings are by visual artists Kimsoy Yap, Dino Dante Pajao, Dr. Nanette N. Catigbe, Ethel Rida, Gintoned C.L. and Rudy Alix.
“In the art scene, watercolor is coming out on its own,” said Rudy Alix. “It is now out of the shadows of oil, pastels, and pencils. Watercolors are the new frontiers being opened up, being explored by the new artists.”
Kimsoy Yap is said to be the master of watercolor hereabouts, although he is also adept with other mediums. Dino Dante Pajao is a member of the exclusive Singapore Watercolor Society, where a panel of masters approves the entry of new members. Nanette Catigbe, MD, is an artist whose passion is quite visible in her work – very detailed and feminine.
Ethel Rida is one watercolor artist who is quite creative in dealing with the limitations of the medium; while Gintoned C.L. employs a style that results in really awesome pieces.
These are the kind of artists that are exploring new frontiers, pushing watercolor into a different art form, a new style, something that is different, according to Rudy Alix.
Staged in cooperation with the International Watercolor Society, “Flores y Piedra” runs until December 15.
