SWU spikers fire warning shot to beach volley rivals

- Lariosa Gloreitta

The Southwestern University (SWU) Phinma spikers fired a warning shot to their rivals after they downed defending champion University of Cebu (UC) in straight sets in the secondary boys division of the 2017 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) beach volley competition yesterday at the Fort San Pedro sand court in Plaza Independencia.

Rancel Varga and Joshua Cedro of SWU-Phinma blended together nicely on the way to frustrate UC's Joshua Sillos and John Espina.

SWU's early success, however, wasn't served on a silver platter as they had to go through a slide before grinding out a 22-20 win in the first set. Sustaining their momentum, they went on to finish off UC via a 21- 15 decision.

SWU-Phinma got even fiercer in their second assignment, ripping off the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U), 21-8, 21-17 to take the early lead with a clean 2-0 slate.

UC, on the other hand, bounced back with fire in their eyes to scorch Don Bosco Technical College (DBTC), 21-15, 21-18.

Also, the University of San Carlos (USC) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) barged into the win column.

USC pounded the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), 21-10, 21-17, while SHS-Ateneo outlasted the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 21-16, 21-19. —
