Money-Saving Tips for Holiday Shopping

- By Alexandra Vergara, USJR BA Communication Intern Shopping alone. “God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7

One of the ways to make holiday shopping merry is by doing it right. Whether it’s for gifts for loved ones or for preparations for the holiday celebration, it helps a lot to have a game plan:

Starting early.

The more time there is, the more time a shopper can evaluate items and prices. Shopping earlier also prevents lastminute panic purchases since people tend to grab whatever is left when given limited time. As a result, price tags are ignored; at least until the credit card bill arrives.

Making a list.

It would ensure that no one is left out in the roll of recipients. A list of people, of gift ideas and of the estimated cost would make a very good quick reference. If the budget is rather tight, group-gifting may also be considered instead of buying individual gifts; it would save time, as well.

Using social media.

These days, almost every retailer is on social media. This makes it easy to get a whiff of promotions and deals.

Thinking simple.

Vintage jewelry, used books, pens, bookmark and interesting housewares are all ideal. It does not have to be elaborate. A lot of inexpensive gifts are available on local thrift stores, and are excellent for curating a gift bagful of personalized presents.

With technology being at the forefront of almost everything these days, budget apps would offer great help. A budget app is a notch higher than a handwritten list.

Buying in cash.

People tend to forget their financial limits when using credit cards. Purchasing in cash would allow less chance for impulsive buying, as it makes one pay closer attention to the money on hand and be more careful of preferences and choices.

One would more likely do more browsing when shopping with someone, one is likely to wander to where the other one goes. But shopping alone, one would be more focused.

Skipping wrapping paper.

The key is to think simply. Considering resources on hand like old newspaper, used maps or a brown paper bag may help instead of splurging on fancy ribbons and wrapping papers.

Nothing feels better than being generous at Christmas. And it does not need to cost so much to give gifts – if one knows where to cut corners.
