Yves Fiel is new CEPCA chessking

Yves Fiel dethroned threetime winner National Master Rogelio Enriquez, Jr. to emerge as the new grand champion in Group A of the Cebu Executives and Profession­als Chess Associatio­n (CEPCA) annual tournament.

They were actually tied with 4.0 points at the end of the 5-round Swiss system competitio­n, but Fiel snatched the title away from Enriquez by virtue of winner-over-the-other rule. Aside from Enriquez, Fiel also outsmarted Jojo Muralla, Aireen Robillos, and Zilverstei­n Torres. He suffered his lone defeat at the hands of Peterson Sia.

Torres placed third with 3.0 points.

In Group B, Jerry San Pascual snared the crown with a perfect 9.0 points. He completed his unbeaten run against John Velarde, Roel Hortelano, Mario Bustillo, Jun Kidlat, Joe Atillo, Manny Abucay, Percival Fiel, Eddy Flores and Martin Sean Kwan.

Kwan finished second with 8.0 points, while Percival Fiel came out third with 6.5 points.

In the non-qualifiers tournament, Vince de la Torre bagged the champion's trophy with 5.5 points. He bested Solon Bagalihog, Donna Lacanaria, Jerry Maratas, Willie Lacanaria, and Consolacio­n Aninipo before fighting to a draw with Jerish Velarde.

Bagalihog wound up second with 4.5 points, while CEPCA President Engr. Jerry Maratas took the third spot with 4.0 points.

Aside from trophies, the top performers also received cash prizes.

CEPCA's year-end event was graced by USbased Cebuano Grandmaste­r Enrico 'Ikong' Sevillano.—
