Interior Design Trends for 2018

- By Alexandra Vergara, USJR BA Communication Intern

The New Year offers another refresh button and it can be “out with the old and in with the new.” In the area of interior design, expert designers foresee certain trends to dominate this year. The choice of colors and design themes reflect a homeowner’s identity. From dark, moody hues to eccentric pieces, a number of decoration ideas can give the home a refreshed vibe this year.

Mosaic-Art Décor.

It’s a design idea which includes a piece of art visualized in tiled form, either an imagery resembling landscape or something more modern and surreal. It is versatile – it can go either vintage, modern or glam and it can go with any theme and palette. The only thing with mosaic-art décor is that it tends to be heavier and can cause damage if not hanged properly.

Going Seaside.

It’s a more refined coastal take on the nautical trend. With schemes of deep indigo contrasting the sea blue hues, this theme can stand out this year. It can be executed with a variety of textures, and huge amounts of white and marbles accents.

Industrial.

This theme is a celebration of raw and unfinished look. It has gained momentum over the year yet it’s likely to be more popular than ever this year. It is living space with history and living features, either a barn or an old mill where simple crockery sets, and minimalist accents and lighting are standards.

Paint Effects.

This year can be a transition from solid colored paintings to color blocks, stencil figures, and other paint effects. The effect of the blend of base colors is an important consideration; it can determine the kind of décor appropriate for the chosen hues.

Greenery.

Hints of green and contrasting earthy tones produce a relaxed rustic trend. Plants may now be moved from outdoors to indoors. Palm leaf and cactus prints on walls and on pieces of weathered woods and other natural materials give off a cool vibe.

Dark and Sophisticated.

Dark colors – from charcoal grey to rich jewel tones – will dominate this year, more than on furniture, according to trendir.com. While such colors may seem intimidating, these also bring powerful and elegant statements.
