• In 1925, “Scarface” Al Capone had his closest shave yet when he got out of his car in Chicago.

Three gun-toting hoods in a black limousine raked Capone’s vehicle with bullets. Said a local policeman who witnessed the shooting, “They hit them with everything but the kitchen stove.” Miraculously, the mobster and his bodyguards escaped unscathed – though his driver was injured. Capone immediately ordered a $30,000 fort-on-wheels from General Motors. The car weighed seven tons and had half-inch-thick bullet-proofed windows, an armor-plated weapon behind the back seat. As a final precaution, it was always preceded by another car full of gunmen, and never arrived anywhere on time!

• In 1942, a dog’s five-and-a-half year vigil came to an end when he was killed by a train at Fort Benton, Montana. The faithful old hound was called Shep, and his long wait began when the coffin of his master, a shepherd, was put on a train at the railroad station and taken away. From then on, Shep watched every train pull in and out, inspecting the passengers and hoping to meet his master again. His incredible loyalty brought him nationwide fame. His mail got so heavy that Great Northern had to assign someone to deal with it – and Shep became the first dog to have a full-time private secretary!

How can I make the most of my times of worship?

God’s Response: “Celebrate the Festival of Trumpets each year on the first day of the appointed month in early autumn. You must call an official day for holy assembly, and you may do no ordinary work. On that day you must present a burnt offering as a pleasing aroma to the Lord… These offerings are given as a special gift to the Lord, a pleasing aroma to Him.” – Numbers 29:1-2,6

God’s Promise: “Give to the Lord the glory He deserves! Bring your offering and come into His presence. Worship the Lord in all His holy splendor.” – 1 Chronicles 16:29
