City may suspend tanods’ allowance
The Cebu City government might temporarily suspend the honorarium for tanods in barangays Carreta, Ermita and Lahug for their failure to submit accomplishment report.
Cebu City Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP) head Garry Lao recommended the suspension of the tanods' honorarium amounting to P4,000 each as they failed to comply with the order of Mayor Tomas Osmeña issued in November last year directing all barangays to submit accomplishment reports of barangay tanods every 5th and 25th of the month instead of a weekly submission.
A letter dated January 11 addressed to Osmeña states that from December 5 to 27, 2017 the three barangays failed to submit accomplishment reports of barangay tanods.
"In this regard, as authorized by your office, may I recommend for the temporary suspension of the city government's allowance of the noncompliant tanods for the month of December…This is a blatant defiance or an act of insubordination to the mandating authority, thus the need for sanction against their glaring dereliction of duty," the letter stated.
Last year, Lao was authorized by the mayor to evaluate the performance of the barangay tanods as a requirement before the city government releases their monthly allowance. Osmeña implemented this after he learned that a number of barangay tanods are not doing their job efficiently.
In a press conference last Friday, Osmeña said he has yet to see Lao's letter but he is inclined to sign it knowing that the said barangays defied his order.
The suspension will be lifted once the barangays submit the tanods' accomplishment reports.
