Slumping Cavs

-

At the start the current NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have been installed as the team to challenge defending champion Golden State for the crown. What with an explosive cast that include Lebron James, Kevin Love, Dwayne Wade, JR Smith, Derrick Rose, Kevin Korver and Isaiah Thomas. The team indeed looked invincible. But look again, as I write this column, the Cavs just absorbed their third straight loss, the first two coming in blowouts. In their game with the Indiana Pacers, James stepped out of bounds with 1.7 seconds to go. The Pacers trailed the Cavs with a 22-point deficit. The Cavs lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-99 and to the Toronto Raptors 133-99. Unless the Cavs get their act together, they will be replaced by the rising Boston Celtics.

GLUE IN THE ASS

It looked that embattled Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Peping Cojuangco has no intention of leaving his post. To recall, a Pasig court has ruled that the election held last November 2016 is nulled and void and ordered a new election on February 23. Cojuangco who’s now 83 years old, said his lawyers will seek legal remedies via the Court of Appeals. Peping is hopeful that the latest move would prevent an election. He also added that he informed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and that this is tantamount to government intervention and the Philippines might just get suspended tsk, tsk!!. “Lisod jud, di gyud mohawa si Peping, basin naka-glue iyang lubot ug di gyud matangtang”.

SLOW CLOCKING

My “kababayan”and tokayo Rafael Pescos won last Sunday’s Cebu City Marathon but his clocking of 2:42:54 is nothing to crow about. The women’s time of 3:16:25 registered by Lizane Abella, is likewise slow. Well, maybe we just ran out of highcaliber runners like Ilonggos Vertek Buenavista and Herman Suizo. Vertek holds the marathon National record of 2:18:44 while my protégée Suizo, a Barcelona Olympics veteran, owns a 2:19:50 record. I’m almost certain these marks will be hard to break considering our current crop, of long distance runners. Anyway, congratulations to CERC for bringing back a more festive marathon after four years.
