- Gloreitta T. Lariosa

Everything is already in place for the Governor's Cup Volleyball Tournament 2018 set to kick off on February 18 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

"We are all set and prepared. We are good as hundred percent for the tournament as it opens next weekend," Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) Executive director Ramil Abing in a press conference at Golden Prince Hotel yesterday.

The province-wide tilt aims to provide a venue for athletes in the grassroots level to compete and showcase their potentials.

"Our goal is to help them discover their full potential and chart their own destiny in terms of a specific sport discipline. We want to help them develop their potential as a volleyball athlete through exposing them in a competitive tournament like this ," said Abing.

Abing said this endeavor will pave the way for future volleyball athletes being their gateway to be discovered and be known in the Cebu volleyball scene.

"We have coaches who will be watching these kids to scout new potentials just like in our basketball tournament, so we should expect that there really a lot of promising athletes that will be discovered," he said.

A total of 29 local government units (LGUs) will vie for supremacy, with 17 teams from the North and 12 from the South.

The North Division luster 1 is composed of Mandaue City, Cordova, Consolacion, Liloan, San Francisco, and Poro. Cluster 2 has Danao City, Carmen, Catmon, Sogod, Asturias, and Balamban and Cluster 3 has Santa Fe, Medellin, Bogo City, Tabugon, and Tuburan.

The contenders in South Division Cluster 1 are Talisay City, Minglanilla, Carcar City, and Argao. Cluster 2 is composed of Dalaguete, Oslob, Santander, Samboan and Ginatilan, while Alegria, Moalboal, and Dumanjug are bundled in Cluster 3.

The Cebu Province will shell out huge bounty to the winners, with the grand champion receiving P300,000. The second to fourth will take home P200,000, P100,000, and P50,000, respectively.

Unlike the first Governor's Cup they had, the 2018 edition will focus on the 18-under age group.

"We are looking at the younger players this time because it was proven before that there are a lot of players who are now playing in big leagues in Manila actually started their training here in Cebu before they got the chance to study and play in the national level," CPSC commissioner Nimrod Quiñones said.

CPSC plans to sustain the volleyball tournament in many years.

"The plan of the sports commission is to make this one a yearly tournament. Sayang if we have grassroots clinic but walay tournament nga pagahimoon, tournament we planned to make it an annual event as well," Abing said.
