The contractor first asked an extension in mid2017 and made another before the year ended. The final product was supposed to be delivered last Thursday.

Each unit of the sea ambulance costs P3.5 million with the funding came from the 2017 budget of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

Dr. Rene Catan explained that the budget for the water-emergency transport came from PDRRMO even before he assumed as the head of the PHO.

“Dili man ta makapurchase og lahing sea ambulance kay naa na man sa PDRRMO. Maquestion from Tabasa Bitoon, Daanbantayan, Cebu, diagnosed with acute Leukemia needs financial assistance for his chemotherapy.

Catan said that he tried following up with the contractor, which he did not name yet, but received no response.

He only said that it was the same contractor that provided speedboats to the provincial government.

The two vehicles were supposed to be intended for the islands of Bantayan and Camotes within the first quarter of this year.

The sea ambulance will transport patients from Camotes Island to Cebu Provincial Hospital - Danao City.

Meanwhile, the one from Bantayan will dock at Hagnaya Port where another ambulance can pick up and transport patients to Cebu Provincial Hospital - Bogo City.

This innovation is eyed to help decrease the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), the number of mothers who die in the process of childbirth.

Travel time, Catan said, is one of the contributing factors why an MMR rises. More travel time meant more delay in the delivery of necessary medical procedure to aid the patient.

Catan added that he will be coordinating with the Bids and Awards Committee (BAC) on what steps shall be undertaken.
