At least 50 houses were razed by fire yesterday afternoon in sitio Beltran, Barangay Quiot, Cebu City.

The city fire department received the alarm at 5: 28 p.m. and raised it to Task Force Alpha 30 minutes later. It declared the fire under control at 6:57 p.m.

According report, the fire started on the second floor of the house owned by a certain Carlito “Boy” Dayanan. Damage was estimated at P500,000.

Dayanan’s house was made of light materials.

According to Senior Fire Officer 2 Lowel Opolentisima, the number of affected houses may be higher since the fire started in the sitio’s interior portion.

“Posible mosaka gyud ang gidaghananon sa panimalay nga apektado kay sudlonon man kaayo maglisod saka atong fire truck unya hinay sab ang supply sa tubig,” Opolentisima said.

Opolentisima said while they are still investigating what triggered the fire, there are speculations that it was caused by children playing with matches.

“Ato pa ipaubos sa imbestigasyon kay daghan man kaayo mga storya atong nadawat, diin adunay nagduwa ug posporo, walay linya sa kuryente, hinungdan atong ipatawag ang tag-iya,” he said.

Opolentisima said no casualty was reported in the incident but a fire volunteer suffered a minor burn.

According to Dayanan, who is a person with disability, there were no children in their house as all his grandchildren were outside during the incident.

“Wala may tawo sa amo taas, kay naa man sa gawas ako mga apo, unya ako ra naa nahibilin kay baldado man ko,” he said.

Dayanan believes someone may have set off a fire at the back of his house where there are bamboo grasses.

“Basin naa nagdaub sa amo likod kay kawayanan mana,” he said.

Dayanan said some neighbors noticed the fire on the second floor of his house but added there was nothing he could do since he cannot move because of his condition.

“Naa nisyagit nga sunog, pero wala koy mahimo kay baldado man ko, mao gitabangan lang ko pagawas,” he said.

Neighbors believed the fire was caused by children playing with matches.
