We should oppose divorce by all means

-

Yes, we support the president’s fight in many fronts. But we oppose divorce, no matter by what name it is called. We support the crusade against drugs minus the EJK. We support Federalism. We support Bangsamoro autonomy, but not independence. We support the extension of Martial law in Mindanao only. We support the ban against deployment of maids to Kuwait and even all over the world. We support the closure of Boracay and El Nido if they do not shape up. We support the possible impeachment of the chief justice, but not the ombudsman. We support the ouster of corrupt bureaucrats, even the possible reimposition of death penalty. But we should never support divorce, no matter how Speaker Alvarez pushes his personal agenda.

I don’t care if the Philippines is the only remaining country in the world, aside from the Vatican, that has no divorce. The presence of divorce laws in the rest of the world does not make divorce the right thing to do. We oppose divorce because it is wrong and serves no useful purpose. It fragments the family, the basic foundation of society and the nation. It weakens the moral fiber of people. It gives rise to dysfunctional families and dysfunctional children.

I oppose divorce because creates more harm than good. Divorce shall only embolden young, impulsive, and reckless lovers to plunge into marriage without enough moral, psychological, emotional, and even financial maturity, thinking they can easily undo their recklessness via divorce. The solution is to make it very difficult to enter into marriage so that there would be little, if at all, need for separation. And if separation is necessary, then the current remedies of legal separation and annulment are still there. There is no need to adopt divorce. It is a concept completely against our culture, beliefs, and temperament as Filipinos.

I oppose divorce because I am concerned with the welfare of the children. They are the innocent and helpless victims of the immaturity, recklessness, and lack of moral fiber of their parents. They are traumatized by the divorce and shall continue to be traumatized by the need to choose between father and mother. There shall be lasting damage on the psyche and the mental health of children, carrying forever in their hearts anger, sadness, and a sense of insecurity resulting from the fragmentation of their family. Divorce is not an urgent thing, it seeks no positive result. It is really bad for our country and people.

If Alvarez has a problem with his marriage, let him solve it without dragging the whole nation into a mess.
