Pink sand beaches in the Philippines

- By Helene Flores

Summer is just a short time away. In fact, the days are already beginning to feel like summer is already here. For sure, everyone’s imagination is now filling up with images of the beach.

White sand beaches are certainly one of the natural features that the Philippines takes pride in. These are a big come-on for tourists, both foreign and local. Many a remote island becomes a popular tourist destination because of its white sand beach.

Right, a white sand beach is really quite a sight. And many people cannot be satisfied with just seeing it – they want to be there and experience it. It’s such a compelling attraction!

Now, if thinking of a white sand beach tickles the imagination, what about a pink

– yes, pink! – sand beach? And it’s not a fantasy movie set. There are really pink sand beaches, and they’re not limited to Maldives or Bahamas; they are also right here in the Philippines!

According to BudgetTravel, the light pink sand “gets its hue from thousands of broken coral pieces, shells, and calcium carbonate materials left behind by foraminifera, tiny marine creatures with red and pink shells that live in the coral reefs that surround the beach.” The denser these elements are on the beach, the pinker the color.

The added appeal of the pink sand beaches in the Philippines is that most of these places are still waiting to be explored. So, aside from the interestingly different color of sand, visitors to any of these local pink sand beaches also get to experience nature at its best. Melo Villareal lists some of these beaches at outoftownblog.com: The Great Santa Cruz Island Great Santa Cruz Island is among the uncommon beaches in the Philippines. Its key attraction is its stunning pink sand beach, which is surrounded by crystal clear waters. The color of the sand bears similarity with the color of cherry blossoms. The color is said to be the effect of crushed Red Organ-Pipe Coral fusing with the white sand.

Pink Beach of Sila Island

It’s considered as one of the prettiest beaches in the Philippines. Sila Island’s pink sand beach is found along the cost of Northern Samar. The pink and powdery sand beach is surrounded by sparkling emerald green and turquoise waters. The unique color of the sand is a result of pulverized red-colored corals and red-shelled creatures called foraminifera that have mixed with the white sand.

The coral and shell fragments are washed ashore during the southwest monsoon season.

Subic Beach

Found in Matnog and divided into two segments, Subic Laki (Subic Big Beach) and Subic Liit (Subic Small Beach), Subic beach is definitely an interesting place to visit. It has fine, pinkish sand surrounded with clear-blue waters. At a closer look, one would see that the creamy white sand by the beach is mixed with crushed deep red colored corals, making for its characteristic hue. Tikling Island

Another pink sand beach found in Matnog, Sorsogon is at Tikling Island. This hidden gem is considered as one of Philippines’ most magnificent beaches. While is mostly rains in the part of the country where Tikling Island is locates, the scenic view of pink beach and green trees surrounding the island is hard to miss. Just like the sands at Subic Beach, the light pink color of the sand is due to a mixture of white sand and pulverized pink corals.

Pundaguitan Beach

Pundaguitan Beach is in Davao Oriental. The stretch of pink sand, lined by green coconut trees is a stunning sight. It is alternately known as the Parola Beach because it is located near the parola or lighthouse. Pundaguitan’s pink sand coloration is an effect of the Red OrganPipe Coral sediments that have mixed with white sand.
