Lasola stops Martinez in PILLARS-MMA action

- Lemuel P. Maglinte

Visiting Negrense Christopher 'Tornado' Lasola pummeled Cebuano stick fighter Rheymark 'Sniper' Martinez in the first round in the main event of the 12th Grand Master Mars Teves-Pilipino Layog Arnis (PILLARS) Mixed Martial Arts tournament the other night at the Pardo Tennis Court, Cebu City.

Martinez was aggresive at the onset delivering blows using arnis stick to the body of Lasola. The pride of CALMA MMA-Cebu also connected kicks, but it was Lasola who executed a perfectly-timed double leg takedown that sent Martinez down to the mats.

Martinez suffered an injured shoulder due to the impact forcing the referee to halt the bout with seven seconds remaining in the first round.

In the other matches, Rustom 'Conqueror' Dawis pounced Leibert 'Bomb' Alalong, Dominador Duyogan outpointed Wildren Silaya, Carlito 'Tura-Tura' Obiso blasted Marjun Ella, Jayson 'Rock' Cabradilla won via unanimous decision over Darwin 'Slugger' Labarda, Jesson 'Thunder' Marangga stopped Stephen Quintero, Ryan 'Slasher' Rabuya mauled Raniel Barcenilla, while Marjun Quinquito and Jeisisler Cena fought to a majority draw.

Conceptualized by Grand Master Marlon 'Mars' Teves of CALMA MMA, the unique combat sport fused arnis stick fighting, kickboxing and grappling.

"We are organizing a bigger tournament later this month. Hopefully we can get more arnis and MMA clubs to participate," said tournament promoter Master Jovito 'Junjie' Abellana of CALMA MMA-Talisay. —
