LGU applauds empowered women
In its report in October 2013, the Labor Force Survey of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said that there are 38.5 million employed in the country and 37.5 percent of these are women. Close to five decades has passed and the number is rising, as aggressive as the call for women’s empowerment.
The monopoly of maledominated jobs in sectors such as law enforcement, business and politics has been neutralized with go-getter women who’s decision and presence transforms choices into actions and outcomes.
Mayor Joven Mondigo Jr. of the Municipality of Medellin acknowledges these women, making them today’s inspirations as we celebrate Women’s Month with a theme “We Make Change Work For Women.” A forum dubbed as “KUKABILDO with Empowered Women” was held in town featuring their very own women power namely Ma. Teresa Gutierez, Chief of Police; FO1 Oshin Jane Ypil, Fire Officer; Imelda Nonay, Brgy. Captain; and the only woman SB Member Agnes Yaun.
These women spoke of motherhood, surpassing discrimination and most of all believing in themselves as women to an audience of almost a hundred.
“This is the first time for the Municipality of Medellin to create a forum platform for these women to speak about their challenges at work, at home and how it was surpassed giving the women an inspiration. These are real people they can relate to and look up on a day to day basis,” said Ms. Janice Sumalinog, MSWDO.
“The forum aims to celebrate women’s journey by sharing stories of their chosen field and encouraging other women and their children not just to work but to be agents of change,” Sumalinog added.
This pursuit of development under the new administration is anchored on the commitment of “Malasakit at Pagbabago” or True Compassion and Real Change.
“We Make Change Work For Women” would be the mantra across the country from 2017-2022 acknowledging the role of women as active contributors and claimholders of development.
