Questions, Questions, Questions
Kids ask the darnest questions, as Bill Cosby would say in his famous television show. It turned out that the kids were actually asking better and logical and intelligent questions than adults!
I had the privilege to experience this myself. Last week I stayed with upper elementary school children of Teacher Maja. The afternoon was as refreshing as being on the beach as 8- year-old Maitina, 11-year-old Nicole, 12-year-oldAllane, 12-year old Amanda asked me questions. I tried to meet their questions with enthusiasm like how I did ever so excitedly to Pin and Andre.
Believing to be a patient person, I never backed down from some "Why" questions of the young ladies.
"Why" questions are good when the questioner wants to solve a problem and not to put blame on a person. "Why" questions are good as well when the questioner wants to know the motivation or intention behind an action. (There are more good "why" questions that a friend Chin Malaca would care to tell you.) In fact, there are some "why" questions that are good to answer especially when answers to these come from fundamental truths.
But there are some "why" questions that refer to ontological arguments. In that case, it is best to not ask them.
In that afternoon it dawned on me that there were more interesting questions than just why. And this learning came from kids! (1) What does this mean? (2) Is this good? (3) Where will this lead? (3) What must I do?
To put it in a Christian perspective, Graham Cooke and Ravi Zacharias tell us that these questions are better to be asked than why. Why, you may ask? Because the God Lord will never answer them. They belong to a realm beyond our knowledge.
If you want to discover on your own, then learn to ask better questions.
