SANTA FE, Bantayan Island — The hometown bets of Santa Fe delighted their fans with a one-sided beating of Bogo City, while Medellin recovered from a slow start to pummel Tuburan in three sets in the resumption of the 2018 Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under-18 Developmental Volleyball Tournament here yesterday.
Inspired by their large of throng of well-wishers, the Santafehanons kept their offensive guns ablaze from the get go to crush the visiting Bogo volleybelles in the first set, 25-17.
The hosts sustained their momentum in the second set where they raced to a hot 8-2 start and never looked back from there onwards.
Bogo was in striking range for the last time at 8-14 as Santa Fe rattled nine straight points to rip the game apart, 21-8.
Earlier, the Medellin spikers floundered in the early goings of the one-hour match but rode on the explosive performance of Stephanie Bustrillo to outlast Tuburan in three sets.
Tuburan capitalized on the rather tentative start of Medellin to steal the opening set, 25-23.
With their backs against the wall, Bustrillo gamely rose to challenge and almost single-handedly carry Medellin on her shoulders.
“Wala ko mawad-i og pag-asa pagkapilde namo sa first. In fact, mao to nakaencourage nako nga mobawi ug mopakita og nindot nga duwa,” said the 17-year-old Bustrillo, who was picked by Team Cebu City to reinforce Central Visayas in the secondary girls volleyball event of the Palarong Pambansa last year in San Jose, Antique.
True enough, Bustrillo displayed a spectacular show of spiking brilliance as Medellin battered Tuburan in the second set, 25-14, to forge a rubbermatch.
In the decider, Bustrillo became even fiercer, delivering powerful shots on all range as they went on to finish Tuburan in dominating fashion, 25-11.
