- By Archie Modequillo EDITOR: ARCHIE MODEQUILLO

The summer school break gathers the kids at home. It gives them plenty of free time as well. Yes, it’s mostly time for having fun – but it can also be good opportunity for engaging in productive activities that are still fun.

Small kids and teenagers easily get bored. While they look forward to the summer vacation for play and having fun, after a while they have enough of it. Yet even if they don’t run out of their enthusiasm for play, they’d sure welcome getting something else essential in their summer activities.

For instance, children could indulge in productive undertakings that will help them develop skills. To start the process, parents may ask the kids to make a list of the other things they’d like to do during the summer break, aside from play. The parents themselves may prime the kids’ thinking by suggesting a few ideas.

GET A SUMMER JOB.

Many establishments welcome young people for a short summer job. The experience is a good way to make the temporary hires understand the value of money – by earning it. Teenagers are often excited with the idea of earning money. They can work as crew at fast-food restaurants, as office and store helps etc. When they have to work to earn money, they’ll just know they have to be mindful in their spending and they’ll carry that money attitude throughout life.

MAKE OR DO SOMETHING TO SELL.

Teenagers may offer to sweep an old neighbor’s yard for a small fee. Maybe walk a busy neighbor’s dog or run errands. Many people wouldn’t mind paying for such necessary help.

Parents may also fire up the young ones by coming up with something for the kids to sell. Mother’s delicious leche flan or chocolate cookie recipe is sure to be a hit in the neighborhood. If not, why not the kids themselves make ice candy to sell house-to-house?

There’s no greater sense of fulfillment to young people than to be counting some money that he or she earned.

LEARN A NEW SKILL.

The few weeks of the summer break are an opportune time for learning new skills. There are, for example, short courses available about computers, cooling, baking, public speaking, theater etc. The knowledge gained from many of these courses does not only bring selfimprovement but can even become a source of income afterwards.

CATCH UP ON YOUR READING.

The benefits of a reading habit cannot be overemphasized. Books are the cheapest ways to discover various things in life. One can get a lot of ideas and new knowledge from reading. The big bulk of free time during summer can be spent in reading those books that one didn’t have time for during the school term.

ENROLL IN A SPORTS CAMP.

Young people who are sports fanatics may spend time in a sports camp. Not only will they get to play their favorite sport, but they also exercise and stay fit. A sports camp teaches team building and helps develop organizational and leadership skills, too. Having a good sports background can even help one to get scholarships at school. Children may also discover hidden potentials to make them consider pursuing a career in the field of sports.

EXPERIMENT AND DISCOVER.

Young people who have not decided on what they want to be may use the summer break to discover where their individual interests lie. For example, a teenager who enjoys making videos may do videos to upload on YouTube. The comments he’ll get for his video will either inspire him to pursue a career in cinema or make him consider other possible options.

There are many other productive activities for young people during summer. Teenagers are full of zest and passion. With proper guidance from their parents, they can channel their bursting energies in doing things that will prime start them into major undertakings in life.
