A two-hour greyhound operation at the Cebu City Jail in Barangay Kalunasan yesterday morning yielded no drugs and paraphernalia but only packs of cigarettes, two units cellular phones, nylon rods and improvised weapons.

Authorities from Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Central Visayas (BJMP-7) and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-7 led the unannounced inspection in the facility which houses mostly inmates involved in drug-related cases.

Last month, the facility was also subjected to a greyhound operation and it was found out that the inmates employed a new method of sneaking in contrabands.

They “fish” for cigarettes outside the jail by throwing a nylon string outside the building and then pull it back after an accomplice ties a cigarette pack to its end.

The pack of cigarette is reportedly sold at P100 to P200 and was briefly considered as the new form of drugs because of its demand.

Jail Superintendent Renante Rubio, jail warden of the male dormitory in a phone interview with The FREEMAN, said there are lesser packs of cigarette confiscated because they placed more guards outside and nets were also installed on the holding cell.

“Although dili pa siya completely wala, at least karon lesser na kay ato man dayon napangitaan og paagi nga dili na sila makabasta-basta og palusot,” Rubio said.

Despite zero confiscation of any form of illegal drugs or paraphernalia, they will not be complacent in implementing rules.

He said they always give stern warning to the visitors but other would still attempt to sneak in contrabands.
