1 dead, 2 injured in road accident

-

One died while two others were wounded after the car they were riding rammed into a concrete fence of a residence in Barangay Magay, Compostela, Cebu Monday dawn.

Melchor Laurente, 33, a resident of Barangay Taytay in Danao City, died while his companions Patrick John Mitchell, 18, and Carla Siaron sustained major injuries.

The three were rushed to the hospital but Laurente expired along the way.

Based on the initial police investigation, Laurente, who was sitting behind the driver, succumbed to serious injuries.

Senior Police Officer 1 Arthur Ariate, Compostela Police Traffic investigator, said the three were bound for Compostela town from Danao City where they had a drinking session in a convenient store.

“Prior nga niari sila sa Compostela para mag-batchoy kay nag-inum ni ang victims sa Danao. Aduna man gani ko’y nakit-an nga botelya sa ilimnong makahubog sulod sa sakyanan dihang atong gisusi,” the police officer said.

The area where they figured in an accident was a bit of an uphill route, said Ariate.

The driver, Mitchell, allegedly lost control and swerved to the opposite lane, slamming into the concrete fence.

Due to the impact, Ariate said, the Honda Hatchback bounced back, hitting a concrete post in the process.

“Naghangad mani ni ang victim (Laurente) mao siya ang nagrabehan. Naigo ni iyang ulo sa poste,” he said.

According to Ariate, Mitchell’s mother assured the victims’ families that she will shoulder all the medical, funeral and other expenses.

Ariate also said the bereaved family of Laurente won’t file a complaint against the 18-year-old driver.
