Full game re-play of controversial Naga-Minglanilla game set June 7
Winner to complete quarterfinal cast in Gov's Cup basketball
All but one of the quarterfinal slots in the 2nd Governor's Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under-21 Developmental Basketball Tournament have already filled up.
The remaining spot will be contested by defending champion Minglanilla Archangels and the Naga City Electrifiers in a grudge rematch of sort set for June 7 at the Cebu Coliseum.
It's going to be a sudden-death duel to watch out for considering that there's a brewing animosity between Minglanilla and Naga after their previous encounter stirred an unprecedented controversy in the history of Cebu hoopdom.
Last April 23 at the Enan Chiong Activity Center in the City of Naga, Minglanilla opened its title defense with a stunning 93-91 overtime loss to Naga.
Minglanilla was up by a hairline, 91-90, when Naga's Justin Atilano sank a booming triple with seven-tenths of a second left in extra time. The regulation period ended at 75-all.
The game, however, was immediately put under protest by Minglanilla. The aggrieved party argued that the 3-point shot should not be counted as Naga committed a violation for having six players inside the court during that crucial sequence of play.
After a thorough deliberation on the ticklish issue that lasted for three days, the Gov's Cup Technical Committee headed by commissioner Danny Duran decided that a fiveminute replay shall be done to determine the rightful winner of the highly contentious match.
Minglanilla at first was hesitant to heed the ruling but eventually agreed to play on condition that a full game, and not just a fiveminute re-play, must be put in place.
"The parties agreed of a full game instead of a five-minute re-play of the game. It's going to be a door-die situation for both teams," said Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) Executive Director and tournament chairman Atty. Ramil P. Abing.
