7 jail officers face probe
At least seven jail officers from the Mandaue City Jail (MCJ) are set to face investigation for their alleged involvement in smuggling contraband and drugs into the jail
Superintendent Jessie Calumpang, chief jail warden of MCJ, said the move came after the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-7 asked why they were still able to confiscate contraband inside the jail.
Last week, the Mandaue City Police Office, in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, conducted a greyhound operation in MCJ where they found two medium packs of suspected shabu, some drug paraphernalia, and P64,000 cash from the cell of suspected drug lord Steve Go.
After Calumpang started his investigation into the alleged involvement of their jail personnel he found out that one of them was involved in transporting contraband into the jail.
"They will be relieved from their post within this week," he said, adding that further investigation will be made and the jail officers in question will be given due process.
If circumstances prove they are part of the contraband smuggling, the jail officers will face corresponding consequences.
"They will (also) face a criminal and administrative complaint which can result into dismissal from service," Calumpang said.
In yesterday's "Oplan Linis Piitan" of the BJMP, Calumpang said no drugs were found, but contraband like high-end cellphones and drug paraphernalia were still found, mostly still in Go's cell.
With this, Calumpang plans to appeal to the court to transfer Go to the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
About 8,000 inmates are housed in MCJ which was designed for only about 200 inmates. Calumpang said he is waiting for the new extension building of MCJ which is set to be finished by the second quarter of 2019.
Aware that appealing to the court might be a long process, Calumpang said they will investigate the source of drugs in MCJ and what complaints they can file against Go following the confiscation of contraband in his cell.
