Cebu bets start strong

Cebuana Tiffany Claire Nocos survived

a scare from Saudi Arabia-based Frances Amor Idjao to win her first match in the girls 14 division of the 23rd JRG Gullas Tennis Cup yesterday at the Alta Vista Golf and

Country Club in Pardo, Cebu City.

Idjao played aggressive­ly, but Nocos proved to be more determined as she registered a 10-7 victory.

Aside from Nocos, other Cebu netters who won their first assignment­s were Aaron Tabura, Chad Connor Cuizon, Andre Calooy and John Coderos.

Tabura silenced Renzo Carl Cosep in the boys 12-under at the CitiGreen Tennis Resort in Barangay Punta Princesa, while Cuizon blasted Samuel Garbosa, 10-4.

Calooy, for his part, dumped John Lataza, 105, in the boys 12, while annihilate­d Francis Plopenio, 10-1 in the boys 14 class.

Mandaue City’s John Ouano trounced Eric Dinas, 10-2 in the boys 12; Heinz Carbonilla blanked Cyrus Cosep, 10-0, Kobi Samson beat Kin Gabinti, 10-5 while Francis De Juan silenced Roman Guangko, 10-0.

In the 16-under action, Randy Tatoy clobbered Iman Apat, 10-0 as Guillian Bandiquill­o blasted Kane Joseph Palana, 10-0. James Vincent Abad also made it to the next round after beating Raymund Goco, 10-6, while Nico Gambal silenced Francis Dela Cerna, 10-4.

Meanwhile, Kristen Albofera, Shai Masicampo, Rica Gudelosao, Corazon Lambonao, Donabelle Roma, Shedel Gica, Nicole Dela Rita, and Blis Bayking advanced into the next round of the girls 16.

Faith Kiarra Banico also had a strong start in the girls 14 after a 10-0 whitewash of Karen Sanchez. —
