Veco expands sub-stations to cope with rising demand

- Ehda M. Dagooc,

The Visayan Electric Co., Inc. VECO) announced the expansion of its sub-station facilities to cope with the soaring demand for electricity in its franchise area.

"The current and planned expansions and the upgrading of our existing substations is being done to meet the increasing demand as well as network improvement to serve our customers better," said VECO assistant vice president for engineering support Bailey del Castillo.

According to Del Castillo there are several substation projects, which are due for completion this year.

This will provide an additional 78.5 MVA ( mega volt amperes) in substation capacity to its network.

Substations in Consolacion and Calamba are already upgraded to 33 MVA each.

The Aboitiz-led company expects to hit a gross revenue of P23.49 billion in 2018, a 3.44 percent improvement of last year's sales performance.

VECO president Jimmy Aboitiz said that aside from the high weather temperature which could push the rise of electricity consumption, the aggressive demand from the industry sector pushes the strong sales.

Thus, VECO is complementing this high electricity demand by expanding its capacity and improve the existing substations.

Currently, VECO is also building a new substation in San Fernando, Naga that carries a 12.5 MVA capacity. This is the 20th substation of the power distribution company. With this, the company's capacity will reach 850 MVA.

Next year, Del Castillo announced that VECO will build at least two more substations.

The Cebu IT Park area will have a new 33 MVA substation, as electricity requirements in this particular area is growing significantly, with companies expanding their operations and other new firms are setting up operations in the cyberpark.

Likewise, VECO will set up a 33 MVA substation at the South Road Properties (SRP) to aid the growing power demand in this area, added del Castillo.

VECO is now serving a total of 427,000 consumers. It is the second largest electric utility in the Philippines, serves the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay and Naga and the municipalities of Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanillla and San Fernando.
