Nutrition and health advocates have encouraged the public to go back to basics and live a healthy lifestyle.

Eleonor Rivera, a health and preventive medicine educator, advised the public to practice self-healing by doing away from hatred and to forgive others. She said people should be grateful each day.

"Let us be at the present moment. We have to empower ourselves because this is our own body and our own life. It's the quality of our life not the length," said Rivera, who is also an integrative nurse coach, during The Freeman Conversations yesterday.

Parolita Mission, nutrition program coordinator of the National Nutrition Council-7, emphasized the importance of food gardening at home and highlighted the issue on the problem of food availability as the country celebrates the 44th Nutrition Month this July. This year's theme is "UgaliingMagtanim, sapatnanutrisyonaanihin."

Marz Amellabon, an occupational therapist, also put emphasis on the importance of parents as role model of the food that their children eat.

"Parents should be a role model to their children. If the parents are eating healthy food then their children will follow," she said.

Amellabon said it is also a big challenge for children to eat healthy food by way of making the food attractive and palatable for the children.

However, she said that if children are not eating despite of all the efforts of the parents, it is best to check with the conditions of the children as they may need medical interventions.

Amellabon suggested to Mission that many occupational therapists would be willing to help the government in addressing these challenges.

Rivera also emphasized the importance of avoiding food that is harmful to the body such as those that are genetically modified.

"We have to eat a variety of food because no vegetable or fruit that is enough to give nutrients that our body needs," said Mission.

Mission, Rivera, and Amellabon agreed that healthy living and exercise are not the only things important in losing weight but also inner peace and avoiding negativities in life.—
