Onthis Day... July 10
• In 1947, a royal engagement was announced between Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten. The £11-a-week naval lieutenant apparently proposed “beside some well-loved loch, the white clouds sailing overhead and the curfew crying.” The lovers first met in Elizabeth`s nursery, where she was playing with a clockwork train!
• In 1958, the world`s heaviest man died. Robert Earl Hughes from Monticello, Illinois, weighed nearly half a ton, and his coffin, a converted piano case, had to be lowered into the grave by a crane.
