UC presents 3 plays
The University of Cebu, Senior High School, Arts and Design, presents “Trapik,” a trilogy of plays.
Written and directed by Emman Mante, “Trapik” is produced by University of Cebu Senior High Arts and Design Grade 12 students in collaboration with the Unified Artists of Cebu. The three plays are inspired by true events centering on the experiences of human trafficking survivors.
The plays aim to give people awareness on human trafficking that will lay down the versions of reality. The first play, entitled “Ate,” is about an idealistic social worker, this pressing issue Jace, who crosses path with Jovie, a minor, and a victim of human trafficking and prostitution. As he tries to fulfill his mission to help the girl, Jace also retraces his own life and soon discovers the darkest depths of atrocities that mankind is capable of.
The second play is entitled “Cherry Blossom Eskapo.” Set in Japan, a young woman, Sarah, aims to provide a better life for her family. She goes to Japan to find work, only to learn that she is recruited as a guest relations officer (GRO) at a club in Japan. Escaping from the abuse of its Filipino club owner, she goes to seek refuge in the most unexpected of places, and in the most unexpected of people.
The last play is entitled “Eva Hamok.” Born and brought up in the countryside, Eva has bold aspirations of going beyond the life she used to have. She soon receives news that grants her wishes: a match and a wedding with an American national. Will this be the happy ending she has longed for all her life?
The Cebuano original play is written in Bisaya.
It also captures the attention of the Manila crowd as it was translated into Tagalog when it was first staged last February as an official entry of the Fringe Manila Arts Festival 2018 produced by theatre Master students in UP Diliman.
This production was launched as part of the internship of the Grade 12 Arts and Design Students of University of Cebu. They are taking roles on production which are divided into three parts: creative, technical and business teams. The aim of this academic endeavor is to expose the students into a semi-professional production outfit through their actual practice in connection to their theatre arts track.
“Trapik” will be staged July 28 and 29 (10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) at the AVR, University of Cebu Senior High School building, Alcantara St. Cebu City.
