A car rental company has expanded its fleet in Cebu owing to the increasing demand for self-drive rent-acar service in the province.

Operated by G & S Transport Corporation, Avis Philippines announced to field 25 to 30 additional units to its 15 existing cars for rent in its Cebu operations to meet the rising demand.

This was revealed by Avis chief operating officer (COO) Juan Miguel G. Lazaro during the formal opening of Avis Philippines Cebu hub office at the second floor of Island Souvenirs store in Mactan.

Aside from the sustaining demand from corporate clients, Lazaro said Cebu operation is also bolstered by tourism-related demand.

Most tourists, including balikbayans and foreign nationals are doing their bookings online through Avis International as self-drive car rental service is slowly gaining ground. In fact, 70 percent of its Cebu operations are self-drive bookings.

The opening of the new Mactan International Airport Terminal 2, Lazaro said is also seen to attract more tourists to Cebu and the company is also anticipating demand for car rentals.

A 24-hour car rental costs an average of P3,000 for a basic sedan unit, like a Toyota Vios. Rates however could go lower depending on the season.

Most tourists book fivedays to a week rental contract with Avis, Lazaro said.

In Cebu peak seasons are Sinulog Festival week, as well as the entire summer season.

G&S Transport Corporation is the Philippine licensee of Avis-Rent-Car International.

In the last 46 years, the Philippine operation has been providing several segments of the car rental industry, including the airport transfer service, car transfer segment, car-hire service, chauffeurdriven, and the self-drive segment.

G&S belongs to the Guevent Investments Development Corporation that has varied business interests including finance, industrial and agricultural development, real estate, insurance, trading and transport services.
