Araneta destroys Tomogdan

- Lemuel P. Maglinte

Omega Boxing Gym stalwart Christian 'The Bomb' Araneta showed that he is one of Philippines rising prospect and he did it in a brutal manner.

In a splendid display of power, the undefeated Araneta (16-0, 14KOs) came up with a devastating 12 round knockout of Jerry Tomogdan (25-10, 13KOs) to snare the vacant WBC Asia Silver light flyweight title in the main event of 'Double Rumble in Mandaue' fight card the other night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

The two ring gladiators engaged in a series of heated exchange until the final round, but it was Araneta who landed a picture perfect left uppercut to the jaw of Tomogdan, who was seperated from his senses as he fell flat on the canvass. The Mindanao brawler laid unconscious for several minutes as medical team rushed to his aid.

With the win, Araneta is now considered as a potential challenger for the WBC title currently held by Thai superstar Wanheng Menayothin.

In the supporting bout, French boxer Jaber Zayani (15-0, 8KOs) kept his record intact with a hard earned split decision victory over Eduardo Mancito (16-9, 9KOs). Zayani also captured the vacant WBO Oriental super featherweight belt.

In the other results, Jobert Alvarez (18-2, 7 KOs) of General Santos City also scored a split decision win over Cebuano journeyman Gerpaul Valero (22-22, 16 KOs), Kawelo Alcos of Hawaii registered his second victory with a majority decision win over debutant Patrick Dakay, Pociano Remandiman won via TKO over Adrian Lerasan, Marjon Piencenaves pounded Jeffrey Stella, while Carlo Bacaro stopped Matthew Fondales in the opening round.—
