UV clinches SBP championsh­ip

A 15-0 start was all they needed and it was practicall­y game over as the University of the Visayas bagged the SBP division championsh­ip over Sacred Heart SchoolAten­eo de Cebu, 49-33, at the 33rd SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament played at the SHS-Ateneo Mango Avenue campus gym over the weekend.

The SBP Lancers streaked to a 15-0 lead and held the Magis Eagles scoreless for over seven minutes to dictate the pace and momentum for the rest of the game.

Denver Bisnar waxed hot from the three-point line with three treys in the quarter and was supported by Jacob Cortes who had four, also in the period.

SHS-Ateneo scored its first point with 30 seconds in the first quarter and added a field goal with six seconds left to end the period at 15-3.

The UV defense held SHS-Ateneo to single digit scoring again in the second period as they opened a 2410 halftime lead.

So dominant was the UV defense that they took as high as a 17 point-lead at 22-5 midway through the second quarter. UV maintained the distance going into the fourth quarter at 33-19.

SHS-Ateneo made one last effort to rally but the closest it could get was at eight points down, 37-29 on Renzo Zanoria’s free throws with 4:20 left in the game as Kent Clark Castro and Marc Abangan replied with a 5-0 run to douse the rally.

Bisnar led UV with 11 points while Jan Mark Toring added nine. Zanorioa led SHS-Ateneo with nine as Brent Suico shared seven. UV will now represent Cebu at the Visayas Regional Finals of the tournament in Bacolod this October.

In Passerelle division games, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Lux Oriens scored its third straight win at the expense of Abellana National School, 49-32. UV also went 3-0, beating SHSAdC Magis, 46-38. Don Bosco came from behind to outscore Southweste­rn University-Phinma, 45-38, in overtime. Sisters of Mary School-Boystown scored it first ever Passerelle victory in school history, 45-39, over Cebu Eastern College.—
